Agn Feedback Causes Downsizing

چکیده
We study the impact of outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) on galaxy formation. Outflows move into the surrounding intergalactic medium (IGM) and heat it sufficiently to prevent it from condensing onto galaxies. In the dense, high-redshift IGM, such feedback requires highly energetic outflows, driven by a large AGN. However, in the more tenuous low-redshift IGM, equivalently strong feedback can be achieved by less energetic winds (and thus smaller galaxies). Using a simple analytic model, we show that this leads to the anti-hierarchical quenching of star-formation in large galaxies, consistent with current observations. At redshifts prior to the formation of large AGN, galaxy formation is hierarchical and follows the growth of dark-matter halos. The transition between the two regimes lies at the z ≈ 2 peak of AGN activity. Subject headings: galaxies: evolution – quasars: general

Low accretion rates at the AGN cosmic downsizing epoch
Context. X-ray surveys of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) indicate “cosmic downsizing”, with the comoving number density of highluminosity objects peaking at higher redshifts (z ∼ 2) than low-luminosity AGN (z < 1). Aims. We test whether downsizing is caused by activity shifting towards low-mass black holes accreting at near-Eddington rates, or by a change in the average rate of accretion onto sup...
متن کاملGlobal Star Formation Revisited
A general treatment of disk star formation is developed from a dissipative multi-phase model, with the dominant dissipation due to cloud collisions. The Schmidt-Kennicutt law emerges naturally for star-forming disks and starbursts. We predict that there should be an inverse correlation between Tully-Fisher law and Schmidt-Kennicutt law residuals. The model is extended to include a multi-phase t...
متن کاملFormation and Evolution of Supermassive Black Holes
The correlation between the mass of supermassive black holes in galaxy nuclei and the mass of the galaxy spheroids or bulges (or more precisely their central velocity dispersion), suggests a common formation scenario for galaxies and their central black holes. The growth of bulges and black holes can commonly proceed through external gas accretion or hierarchical mergers, and are both related t...

We discuss the role of feedback from AGNs on the formation of spheroidal galaxies. The energy released by an accreting Black Hole (BH) may be injected into the ISM through blast waves arising directly from the central engine, radiation pressure or radiative heating. A scenario is described in which radiative heating perturbs the methabolism of a star-forming spheroid, leading to a critical stag...
متن کاملAGN host galaxy mass function in COSMOS - Is AGN feedback responsible for the mass-quenching of galaxies?
We investigate the role of supermassive black holes in the global context of galaxy evolution by measuring the host galaxy stellar mass function (HGMF) and the specific accretion rate, that is, λSAR, the distribution function (SARDF), up to z ∼ 2.5 with ∼1000 X-ray selected AGN from XMM-COSMOS. Using a maximum likelihood approach, we jointly fit the stellar mass function and specific accretion ...
